Android Advanced Troubleshooting (Bluetooth & Sync)

AlterMe supports Android devices running Android 12 or newer operating systems. Devices using older Android versions aren’t supported and may experience connection or syncing issues.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

If you’re on Android 12+, and your AlterMe Ring isn’t connecting or syncing reliably, one or more system permissions may be restricting Bluetooth activity in the background. Follow the steps below to restore a stable connection.

Note: Because Android is used by many different phone brands, some settings may appear in slightly different locations or under different names on your device.

1. Check your Android OS version

You can check your Android version using either of the options below.

Option 1: Use Settings search (fastest)

  • Open Settings on your Android device

  • Tap the search icon at the top of the screen

  • Type Android version and select it from the results

  • If prompted, tap Software information

  • View your Android version

Option 2: Browse through Settings

  • Open Settings

  • Scroll down and tap About phone (or About device)

  • If you don’t see it right away, tap Software information

  • View your Android version

2. Allow Bluetooth and Nearby Device Access

Android 12+ requires Nearby Devices permission for Bluetooth accessories.

Steps

  • Open Settings → Apps → AlterMe

  • Tap Permissions

  • Set the following to Allow:

    • Nearby devices

    • Bluetooth (if listed, if not follow step 3)

    • Location

Location permission is required by Android for Bluetooth device discovery. AlterMe does not track your location.

3. Turn On Bluetooth Scanning

Bluetooth scanning helps your phone reconnect to your ring automatically.

Steps

  • Go to Settings → Location

  • Tap Location services

  • Turn Bluetooth scanning ON

4. Disable Battery Restrictions for AlterMe

Battery optimizations can interrupt Bluetooth syncing.

Steps

  • Go to Settings → Apps → AlterMe

  • Tap Battery

  • Select Unrestricted or Allow background activity

  • Make sure Battery Saver is turned OFF

5. Allow Background Data

AlterMe needs background data access to sync when the app isn’t open.

Steps

  • Go to Settings → Apps → AlterMe

  • Tap Mobile data & Wi-Fi

  • Turn Background data usage ON

6. Restart Bluetooth

This clears temporary Bluetooth connection issues.

Steps

  • Turn Bluetooth OFF

  • Wait 10 seconds

  • Turn Bluetooth ON

  • Open the AlterMe app and allow it time to reconnect

Additional Android Checks (If Issues Continue)

If you’ve completed the steps above and your ring still isn’t syncing, try the following:

  • Keep Bluetooth ON at all times and avoid system routines that turn it off

  • Check “Sleeping Apps” or App Cleaning features

    • Go to Settings → Battery → Background usage limits

    • Remove AlterMe from Sleeping or Deep Sleeping apps

  • Enable Precise Location (if available)

    • Settings → Apps → AlterMe → Permissions → Location

    • Set to Allow all the time and enable Precise location

  • Temporarily disable other Bluetooth devices (smartwatches, earbuds, fitness bands) and attempt a sync

  • Restart your phone to refresh Bluetooth and background services
