Using and returning your AlterMe DNA swab kit is quick and simple. Follow the steps below to ensure your sample is collected correctly and reaches the lab without delay. You’ll receive email and text updates along the way to keep you informed.

A sample return bag
Return shipping box (the same box your kit arrived in): Your kit is shipped inside the return box. Use this same box to send your sample back. Once you remove the outer sleeve, you'll see a prepaid USPS return label addresses to "LABORATORY PROCESSING" in Salt Lake City, UT is already attached to the bottom of the sample box—no additional packaging is required.
To remove the inner box from the outer sleeve, push on the short side of the outer box, and the inner box will pop out.
Step 1: Register Your DNA Kit
Before mailing your sample, you must register your kit so we can match your sample to you! Please use the same name, email address, and phone number you used to purchase your kit to ensure your kit is matched correctly to your account.
Registering your kit is vital because it ensures that you can get your results securely and confidentially.
You can register in either of these ways:
Scan the QR code on the instruction insert inside your kit
Visit AlterMe.com/register
You’ll be asked to enter two codes printed on your sample tube:
12-digit Kit ID number
4-digit Verification Code
Step 2: Prepare for Swabbing
Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum for 30 minutes before swabbing.
No fasting is required.
It’s often easiest to swab first thing in the morning.
Step 3: Collect Your Sample
To open the swab tube, hold the tube firmly and bend and pull the cap off, similar to snapping a glow stick. This motion will release the can so you can access the swab tube. The cap does not twist off.
Using the swab, rotate and swirl along one side of your lower gums 10 times.
Repeat on the other side.
Place the swab back into the tube and close it securely.
Step 4: Package Your Sample
Place the sealed swab tube into the plastic bag.
Put the bag into the return shipping box (the same box your kit arrived in).
To remove the inner box from the outer sleeve, push on the short side of the outer box, and the inner box will pop out. Locate the pre-attached USPS return label on the bottom of the box. Addressed to "LABORATORY PROCESSING" in Salt Lake City, UT.
Peel off the protective strip to expose the adhesive.
Fold the box and press firmly to seal it using the adhesive strip.
Step 5: Return Your Sample
Drop the sealed box at your local post office, or
Schedule a USPS pickup
No postage is required if mailing within the United States.
For best results, return your sample within 24 hours of swabbing. If there’s a short delay, don’t worry—your sample is designed to withstand normal shipping and temperature variations.

Can I swab if I am sick?
Yes. You can collect your sample while sick. Follow the standard prep and swabbing instructions.
How quickly should I return my sample?
