My steps don’t seem to be tracking accurately. What should I do?

If your steps look inaccurate, start here.

Differences between step counters are normal—each device uses its own sensors and algorithms. Wrist-based wearables may interpret steps or movement differently from finger-based wearables.

Your AlterMe Ring adapts to your movement and how you wear it to get the most accurate results.

If the count feels noticeably off, start with these tips:

  • Regularly update your AlterMe app to ensure the most accurate tracking algorithm

  • Charge your ring daily for at least 20 minutes to maintain consistent performance.

If you're still finding issues

  • Adjust Step Sensitivity: In the AlterMe app, go to Settings → Preferences → Step Sensitivity and change the level. If steps seem too low, increase sensitivity; if too high, decrease it. To further enhance step detection sensitivity, select the "Expanded Detection" option in the Step Sensitivity settings.

  • Check fit & wear: The ring should fit snugly (but comfortably) on ideally your index, middle, or ring finger–with sensors facing the palm side. Hand positioning (e.g., holding a dog leash or phone, pushing a stroller) can have subtle effects on step detection. Try shifting your wearable to your other hand. Ensure a snug fit on your finger to maintain consistent sensor contact, as loose or shifting rings can cause inaccuracies.

As with all biometric data, we recommend tracking your averages, and not stress if your step count is mildly off.
