SmartZone is personal — what pushes one person into the zone might barely move another. Here's how to dial it in either direction.
If you can't get into the zone
Your session feels too easy and your heart rate isn't climbing. Try:
Pick up your pace — move faster than the trainer is leading
Speed up your reps — moving with more intent raises intensity without changing the exercise
Increase time under tension — slow down the lowering phase of each movement to make it harder
Go heavier — if the session uses bands or weights, increase your resistance
If you can't stay in the zone
Your heart rate is spiking or you're losing your breath. Try:
Slow your pace — go slower than the trainer, you don't need to match them exactly
Reduce your range of motion — a shallower squat or a partial push up is still a squat and a push up
Modify freely — drop a knee, hold the back of a chair, step instead of jump. You never need permission to make a movement work for your body
Take a rest — pause, gather your breath, and rejoin when you're ready
If you're frustrated and fixated on the zone
Let it go. The SmartZone is a guide, not a grade. As long as the session feels generally enjoyable and not draining, you're doing it right. Consistency over perfection — every time.
